The Pets of the Week are Irl and Imax, two Mutts with Manners dogs. DBCHS developed MWM in 2009 to provide one-on-one training and companionship for shelter dogs.

Carefully screened prison inmates are paired with shelter dogs for a program cosponsored by Northpoint Training Center in Burgin. Inmates, prison staff, and volunteers work together to provide dogs with basic obedience training, socialization, and behavior modification.

Prison inmates live with their dogs in the dormitory and attend weekly sessions with an expert volunteer dog trainer. Dogs graduate with many valuable skills like sit, stay, down, and paw and have excellent recall (come when you call them). MWM dogs are confident and well-socialized and will make an ideal companions for anyone.

Six-year-old Irl (previously known as Bailey) appears regal and mature in his picture, but this guy is a hoot and a half. He gallops like an eager, clumsy pony, those long, soft, floppy ears swaying. Irl will slow down to get petted, closing his sweet brown eyes in pleasure. Irl has been in training for six months and has all the skills he needs to fit perfectly into any family.

Imax (previously known as Cupid) is almost 2 years old and 100% sweet. He prefers to snuggle than play hard and wants to be next to people. Imax isn’t shy — he lies in your lap and gazes lovingly into your eyes. Like all MWMs, Imax is more than his great personality; he’s also got mad skills to show his family.

All our Mutts are up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and ready to get sprung. If you want to adopt a Mutts with Manners dog, please complete an online application at https://www.dbchs.org/muttswithmannersdogs. If you’re a good fit for one of our Mutts, a volunteer will contact you to schedule a meet-and-greet. Let’s get these deserving and well-trained pups into homes soon.
