The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, online resources, and numerous services for the community. Programs often include storytimes, crafting programs, art exhibits, and gaming events. Weekly youth events have paused for the remainder of December; they will resume in January. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events and activities at the library:

 

Chess Club

On Saturday, Dec. 16 from 2-4 p.m., the library’s collection of chess boards will be set up in the Reading Room. This monthly club provides a dedicated time and quiet place for a friendly game of intellect and strategy. (All ages)

 

Tranquility Tuesday

On Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m., explore all the ways you can reduce stress and manage anxiety by incorporating mindfulness techniques into your daily life. We will learn and try a variety of mindfulness activities, such as mindful eating, deep breathing, body scan, and more. This month the focus is on Goals and Resolutions. This program series will be offered on the thirrd Tuesday of the month at the library, in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension Service. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Third Thursday Book Club

In December the book club will be reading Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. Join the book discussion on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

12 Days of Winter Reading Challenge

You’re invited to celebrate the season with 12 Days of Winter Reading! Everyone who completes 12 days of reading is a winner in this winter reading challenge. Use your Beanstack account to track your reading to earn a 2024 Library calendar and chances to win our Grand Prizes. When you finish the first 12 days of reading, you’ll receive a chance to enter the Grand Prize drawings. Every time you complete 12 days of reading you earn an additional entry into the Grand Prize drawings. All ages are encouraged to participate. Soundscapes: Our Sound(e)scapes Exhibit

The Library is hosting a multimedia exhibit featuring soundscapes created by local students from Danville High School and Boyle County High School. The exhibit is on display in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery at BCPL through Jan. 13.

The Sound(e)scapes exhibit is the culmination of a series of workshops facilitated by author Heather Henson and artist Elizabeth Haigh. Students read and discussed Henson’s young adult novel, Wrecked, then worked with Haigh to create “soundscapes,” works of art that thoughtfully combine a variety of sounds to evoke a particular location or mood. Many of the students’ soundscapes were inspired by Wrecked or by other literary texts of their choosing.

The goal of the project was to broaden the students’ understanding of how different art forms – in this case, written word and sound – can complement one another and can serve as inspiration for artistic self-expression. Visitors to the exhibit will be able to experience the students’ audio recordings by scanning QR codes with their smartphones. This project was made possible by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts, Simon & Schuster Publishing, and Plaid Elephant Books. A Closing Reception will be held on Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the library.
