Summer Reading “Adventure Begins at Your Library” is in full swing at the Boyle County Public Library, providing families and people of all ages fun, affordable activities to enjoy this summer. This year, the library is offering many adventure-themed activities. Exciting performances, outdoor movie nights, crafts, and storytimes are included in an extensive list of free events for a variety of ages. In addition to the activities, patrons are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. Anyone who reads for 12 days and logs their reading using Beanstack will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming Summer Reading events:

“Betty Boyle’s Downtown Danville Adventure Quest”

You’re invited to adventure through Danville in this interactive mystery adventure! Use your smartphone to follow Betty Boyle as she tries to figure out who sabotaged her plane and why. To get started, visit the Library and find the Betty Boyle poster. Scan the QR code on the poster with your smartphone, then head off on your walking quest around town to gather clues using your phone and the Beanstack app. If you can find the right culprit, you’ll be entered to win a special prize! Summer Storytime

Join us at the library for summer storytime. Storytime is where we sing, play, and read! Storytimes in June and July will be held outside in the Library Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM. Each week we will read themed stories and have an activity for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy. (Ages Birth-5)

 

Y.A. Franken-Plushies

On Tuesday, June 25 from 2:30-4:00 PM, unleash your imagination and embrace your inner mad scientist as you assemble your own one-of-a-kind “Franken-Plushie” creation. Mix-and-match a variety of stuffed animal, doll, and toy parts and fabricate them into a unique form using needle-and-thread or glue. Once your creation is assembled and named, you’ll receive a “birth certificate” to celebrate the completion of your Franken-Plushie. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-17)

 

Summer Craft: Bookbinding

At this summer craft for adults, learn the art of basic bookbinding. On Tuesday, June 25 from 6:00-7:30 PM, using the materials provided and the techniques taught, you will be able to make and take home your own journal at the end of the program. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Adventures in the Arts: Kids Karate

Has your child ever been interested in learning Karate? On Wednesday, June 26 at 2:30 PM, kids can come learn basic skills and see if they would like to take the next steps into this art form. They will join instructor Shinji Matsuda from US Yoshukai Karate to learn karate for beginners. Participants will learn from a 4th degree Master with years of experience teaching kids of all ages. Registration is required so we can know the participants’ age and skill level. Waivers are also required. Visit the event listing on the library’s website to register and download a waiver. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 6-10)

 

FAFSA Help with KHEAA

On Wednesday, June 26 from 2:00-5:00 PM, experts from Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) help you navigate the new FAFSA form. This come-and-go workshop provides students and parents with the detailed information they need to apply for student financial aid. Students and parents will learn about the financial aid process, discovering when and how to apply for state and federal funds. Options for filling the gap if traditional financial aid does not meet their need will be discussed; and common application mistakes, financial aid blunders and other information will be covered. This workshop will be held in the Map Room. (Ages 13+)

 

Thursday FunDay: The Space Painter

As part of the summer Thursday FunDays performance series, on Thursday, June 27 at 10:30 AM the library will bring The Space Painter: Adventure Juggler to Gravely Hall at Danville High School. The show is a comic romp of long-distance ball, club, and bird manipulation. Don’t worry, it’s all planned out on the juggling map, but we will travel as the bird flies! You’ll be transformed into adventure jugglers at this hands-on, interactive event. This event is free to attend. You can also visit the Bookmobile before and after the show. ASL interpretation will be available at this event. (All ages)

 

Adventure Short Fiction Writing Workshop

On Thursday, June 27 from 5:30-7:00 PM, the library will host the final session of a 4-part writing workshop with a focus on creating stories in the genre of Adventure. Led by local author Paul Stansbury, this is a hands-on instructional workshop designed to help writers develop their skills. This program will be held weekly in the Conference Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Crochet Club

On Thursday, June 27 at 6:00 PM, the library will host Crochet Club. Held monthly on the fourth Thursday, this program is focused on community, conversation, and crocheting (or knitting). Any and all fiber arts are welcome. Bring your own yarn, needles, and projects, or take from our limited supply and we’ll work independently while gathering with others. This event will be held in the Reading Room. All skill levels are welcome. (Ages 18+)

 

Yoga

On Fridays in June and July, dive into a transformative experience where you’ll learn the art of harmonizing the breath, balance, stability, and flexibility. Through guided breathwork, balance poses, and soothing stretches, discover a deeper connection to your body and mind. Join us for an invigorating yet calming journey toward inner peace and well-being. This class will be held on Fridays at 11:00 AM in the Community Room. Registration is required. Starlight Movie Night

Watch a movie outside under the stars at the library on Friday evenings in June and July. First, come early to join our Pre-show Party to play outdoor games. Then, set out your lawn chair in the Library Park to settle in to watch a movie perfect for the whole family. Movie starts at dusk (around 9:00 PM) with an expected runtime of 90-120 minutes. On June 28, watch an action-packed animated movie about brother turtles who work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants. Rated PG; 1 hr 39 min; 2023 (All ages)

 

Silent Book Club

On Saturday, June 29 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, come be a part of BCPL’s chapter of the Silent Book Club. Meet at the library on the last Saturday of the month for a couple of hours of silent reading with other book lovers. Enjoy the community of book club without the pressure of assigned reading! This event will be held in the Reading Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Judy Schaefer Art Exhibit 

The Boyle County Public Library is hosting an art exhibit featuring works by local artist Judy Schaefer. The exhibit, which features still life and landscape art, will be on display at the library in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery through June 26, 2024.

 

COMING UP IN JULY:

Hook and Cook Fishing Workshop

Join us for “Hook and Cook,” the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Department’s hands-on fishing workshop. This three-part workshop will be held at a different location each week. Registration is required. The first session will be held on Tuesday, July 2 from 5:30-8:30 PM, at the Boyle County Extension Office (99 Corporate Drive, Danville, KY). At this session you’ll learn how to prepare and cook fish that you’ve caught.

The second session will be held at the Boyle County Public Library on July 9. In this session you will receive expert guidance on fishing techniques and proper procedures as well as fish identification. The final session will be held on July 16, at Millennium Park in Danville, where you will get to put into practice everything you have learned with some real live fishing under the tutelage of the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
