Danville City Commission has approved the submission of an application for a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant, which would fund the next steps in the Danville streetscape master plan. 

If the city is awarded this grant, it will fund the replacements of sidewalks, curbs and streetlights from Second Street to Fourth Street. This area of downtown Danville is the next priority step in the master plan. 

“This is a much needed thing,” City Commissioner Rick Serres said. “There’s been a cry from downtown to take care of some of our sidewalks.” 

City Engineer Earl Coffey said officials are still in the process of looking at another stretch of Main Street from Fourth Street to Fifth Street. 

“We do not have an update on the status of that,” he said. 

The TAP grant is 80 percent grant and 20 percent local matching funds. City Engineer Earl Coffey said the total budget for the project is $1,160,758. He is asking the City Commission to have set aside $232,152 if they receive the grant. This would leave the awarded portion at $928,606. 

“The key elements to the application are the budget and that is not changing,” Coffey said. 

City Manager Ron Scott said completing the application was a coordinated effort among several people.

“I am hopeful that we will be funded,” he said.
