Dear Editor,

I live in Danville, but my native home is Hopkinsville, much in recent news. I have retained a bit of Hoptown memorabilia, and one bygone story has always made me chuckle. It pertains to an eclipse of another time.

It seems a “New Era” reporter was assigned to write an account of local effects of the eclipse. Bringing it to his editor, he was told it was fine but too brief to fill the hole saved for it. Could he write another paragraph? He returned with these lines:

“People came out of their homes and looked at the sky. And a few dogs barked.” Guess that eclipse wasn’t taken as seriously as Monday’s.
