Main Street was shut down Monday morning between Third Street and Wilderness Road, due to a garbage truck leaking hydraulic fluid onto the roadway.

Danville Police and Fire departments received a call about the truck’s leak around 6 a.m. and immediately placed barricades to prevent the spread of the slippery fluid from vehicles’ tires to other streets, according to Mike Wilder, director of Boyle County Emergency Management.

An absorbent substance similar to cat litter was poured on the spill, which stretched about a mile down Main Street, Wilder said.

A cleanup crew with First Call Environmental out of Lexington arrived at about 9 a.m. with a street sweeper and other equipment to complete the hazardous spill cleanup.

Wilder said Main Street was reopened at 12:30 p.m. after the crew soaked up and brushed off the mess. As a last step in the process, employees of Caldwell Stone came on scene and spread sand to aid in more traction as an extra precaution.

Wilder said they were lucky the situation happened on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday because schools, banks, the courthouse and other businesses were closed. He said traffic problems would have been much worse had the normal commuter numbers been present.

Despite the presence of several emergency vehicles with lights flashing, Main Street being closed and barricades along intersecting streets, no one was in danger, Wilder said.
