Boyle County High School will be the site of a mock active shooter exercise on Aug. 3, from 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Led by the Danville-Boyle County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the full-scale exercise will test the responsiveness of local emergency agencies during an active shooter scenario.

Boyle County Schools’ staff, families and high school students are invited to participate in the exercise. The scenario will simulate the school’s regular morning arrival routine and volunteers will be assigned a variety of roles.

A mandatory planning meeting has been scheduled for all volunteers from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Boyle County High School.

EMA Director Mike Wilder and community partners have spent more than a year planning the simulation to test emergency policies, procedures and training for potential gaps or voids.

“It’s time to be proactive,” noted Wilder. “To test our instant command system, first-responder skills and communication procedures in a live, responsive environment.”

Boyle County Schools Assistant Superintendent and School Safety Officer Chris Holderman added, “This exercise will be an important learning opportunity. When everyone comes together and puts safety at the forefront of the conversation, it improves collaboration and creates safer communities.”
