Boyle honors cheer coach in 7th annual Strikeout Cancer game

Boyle County’s baseball program held its seventh-annual Strikeout Cancer game on Tuesday against Danville.

This year — like every year — is special to the Rebels, who donate monies raised to a different cause each year. This year, Boyle honored cheer coach Denise Preston Young, an alumna of Boyle County High School. Young was diagnosed with duodenal cancer in January.

“Obviously we’ve done this for some years now, and unfortunately it’s special to us,” Boyle baseball coach Kyle Wynn said. “That may sound a little different but it’s special because of how much it has affected our baseball family, others in our school and the Boyle County family and community.

Young threw out the first pitch of Tuesday’s game.

“To have her, battling through it, hats off to her,” Wynn said. “She’s tough, she’s going through her treatments. That teaches our guys about toughness as well. When we can honor one of our own, our cheer coach in our athletic department, it’s something special. We want to let her know that we’re behind her and we’re with her and praying for her.”

Boyle County is still selling shirts for the event. If you’d like to purchase a shirt, you can email Katie Tiller: katie.tiller@boyle.kyschools.us.
