A joint proclamation was signed Friday by Boyle County Judge-Executive Howard Hunt,right, and Danville Mayor Mike Perros in honor of what Memorial Day really means. It explains the holiday was first

established as Decoration Day after the Civil War, set aside for families and friends to visit and decorate graves of troops lost in the conflict. “We must continue to remind Americans there is no freedom without bravery, and those we honor today were brave when it counted the most.” It also states that Boyle County and Danville “will perpetually honor our local 14 service members from World War I; 49 service members from World War II; eight service members from the Korean War; and six members from the Viet Nam War” who lost their lives. A special ceremony will be held 1 p.m. today (Saturday, May 25) at Danville Memorial Gardens to honor the 77 Boyle Countians “who gave up their todays for our tomorrows.”
