For the third year, students kindergarten through fifth grade will take advantage of the district’s After School care. The program, which is headed up by two Woodlawn Elementary School teachers, offers activities, homework time and help, and a snack. This gives the children a safe place to stay until their parent or caregiver picks them up, which is not only important, but is significant because Boyle County is considered a childcare desert.

“We are excited to be able to offer this program again this year, ” stated Jenna Blair, Boyle County Schools Elementary Academic Achievement Coordinator/Preschool Director, who also oversees After School Care. “This program encompasses many components that are student-centered such as homework help, tutoring, small academic groups, physical activity, and a healthy snack. Our main goal is to keep our students safe after school while also being able to offer more opportunities for our students.”

Children from all three elementary schools can attend the program, with busing provided from Junction City Elementary School and Perryville Elementary School. The program starts right after the school bell rings, with parents and caregivers then having until 6 p.m. to pick up their children.

“This is a fantastic way to offer a needed service for our students,” commented Barbara Matheny, one of the teachers overseeing the program. “We hope it will help families feel less anxious about how they are going to take care of their children in those few hours.”

The program has increased in students with each year.
