In the first meet of the season, the Boyle County swim team already notched its first win and did so in a big way.

Taking the top spot in 15 of the 24 events, the Rebels finished with the best combined score — 1,246. Oldham County finished second with 1,013 while host Collins placed third with a score of 948. The boys and girls team were both equally dominant, with the boys winning with a total score of 615 and the girls finishing nearly 200 points higher than second place Collins — 631 to 436.

“The kids swam very well tonight in our season opener.  We had a lot of best times and a lot of close to best times,” swimming coach Crystal Ellis said. “They are always a great thing to have at the first meet. We have several new swimmers this year and they did great. We have a lot of talent and can’t wait to see how that, plus hard work pays off this season.”

The girls team set the pace in the first event of the day when they took the best time in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Cora Gilbert, Isabella Spencer, Whitney Bean and Riley Cerquiera finished just ahead of second place Oldham County with a time of 2:01.73 to earn 48 points. The team of Ella Grace Gover, Christine Haddad, Eve Sadler and Kyndall Honaker finished with the third best time.

The boys team would follow that up with a first place finish of its own when Corbin Coyle, Campbell Coyle, Creed Farthing and Alex Lockhart finished the relay in 1:43.45, over four seconds faster than second place.

Bean and Nancy Haddad would finish second and third, respectively in the 200 yard freestyle to add a combined 41 points to the Rebels total. Clark Coyle and Lockhart would go first and second in the boys side of the event to add 43 points. 

From there, Boyle would go on to dominate the meet, finishing in first or second in 14 of the next 20 events, including the girls 50-yard freestyle where Cerqueira, Kate Hoffman, Maggie Cerqueira, Spencer, and Christine Haddad finished in order as the top five of the race.

In the boys side of that event, the Rebels took six of the top 10 spots, including Campbell Coyle’s first place finish and Trey Barnett’s third.

The Rebels will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Marion County.
