Danville’s young wrestling team continues to grow and improve on the season.

On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27-28, the Admirals had three wrestlers place in their weight class at the Woodford County Invitational.

Morgan Sallee followed up his win the week before with a win in a weight class below, taking the 113 pound crown — the same division he finished eighth in last year’s state tournament.

Freshman TyShawn Lyttle and Justus Turner placed sixth in the 152 and 170 pound classes, respectively.

“Our young guys keep gaining valuable experience,” Danville coach Joey Sallee said about the weekend. “Turner and Lyttle are both freshmen, but both wrestled well the last two days. We were missing quite a few kids. We have dealt with illness and injuries. Hopefully, we can get well and be ready to go next weekend at Perry Central.”

After receiving a bye in the first round, Sallee won his first match over the host school’s Jackson Reed in only 11 seconds. 

His second match lasted a little longer as Sallee needed 31 seconds to take down Noah Toomey in the semifinals. In the championship, Salle won his third fall of the tournament, taking down McCreary Central’s Jeremiah Baird in only 28 seconds.

Lyttle won his opening match over Knox County’s Devon Knuckles, 2-0 in the first round. In the second round, Lyttle fell to Braden Giannone from Lafayette in 23 seconds. In the second consolation round, Lyttle was set to take on teammate Holden McKnight, but McKnight ceded the match. Lyttle won his consolation quarterfinal match with Spencer County’s Nathan Webb, 3-0, but fell to Frank Chsiley of Scott County in the fifth place match.

Turner had a first round by and took down Tyler James from Boyd County in 1:47. In the semifinals, Turner lost by major decision, 11-3, to Spencer County’s Devin Rahrig.

Turner would then lose in the consolation semis to Will Smithers in 2:10 and went even deeper with Bryan Station’s Faisal al-Abassi in the fifth place match, falling to him in 2:32.

The Admirals also had Micah Chappell advance to the consolation quarterfinals in the 126 pound division, taking Landen Baker from Harrison County 3:48 before falling. James Perry also advanced to the consolation quarterfinals, falling Knox County’s Andrew Daniel.

Danville will be back in action for the Whitley County Battle of the Burg on Jan. 4 and will compete in the Sectional Duals at Freedom Hall in Louisville on Jan 10-11.
