The Danville boys soccer team fell 6-4 at Somerset in the All A region final on Saturday afternoon. For the second time in as many games, the Admirals (6-3-0) were in a hole early, conceding a goal in the first minute.
Danville’s Abel Goodwin netted the equalizer in the 15th minute, and the Admirals grabbed the lead just before halftime when Sam Finke found Carter Dilbeck at the back post off a free kick from the wing.
Danville’s lead wouldn’t last long though. The Briar Jumpers (5-2-0) came out after the break and tied the game at 2-2 less than two minutes into the second half. Somerset continued a dominant stretch and struck again as Andrew Tomlinson scored to regain the lead at 3-2.
As the clock wound down in the second half, Danville scored two goals in the span of two minutes. Freshman Sasha Wade’s skip header found Carter Dilbeck at the far post to pull Danville even at 3-3. Not long after, Wade applied pressure on a Somerset defender attempting to clear the ball out of the penalty box. The deflection landed neatly for Nehmiah Espinoza to volley home a goal that put the Ads up 4-3 with 12:30 remaining in the game.
However, the third lead change of the game would not be the last. The Briar Jumpers scored three goals in the span of four minutes for a 6-4 victory.
The game was the start of a five game road trip for the Ads, who played Monday at Pulaski County before returning to district play Thursday at Lincoln County.
