What’s better than saving a shelter pet? Preventing a pet from going to the shelter in the first place. This week our featured pets are Bluey and Hercules, two dogs available for adoption through the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society’s Home To Home program.

When we bring a dog or cat into our family, we intend for it to be “furever.” But things happen, and there are times when rehoming a pet may be the most compassionate and responsible choice.

Home To Home is a unique, direct-to-adopter program; in just a few simple steps, pets can find a loving new home without ever seeing the inside of a shelter. Home To Home gives animals needing a new home the best of both worlds: their current family can find the best fit, and their adopter can learn about the pet’s personality and preferences. Plus, it reduces animals’ anxiety. Instead of enduring a stressful stay at the shelter, pets stay in a home until they’re adopted.

DBCHS is committed to helping people keep pets out of the shelter with safety nets like Home To Home, and it’s working. In the last year and a half, we’ve helped place more than 160 pets in new, loving homes without the animal ever stepping a paw into the shelter.

Let’s do the same for our Pets of the Week, Bluey and Hercules.

Bluey is a good-looking boy of about two years old, with gray fur and golden eyes. His foster family describes him as a sweet dog who loves to jump, play, and chew. Bluey listens well to commands so it will be easy to teach him good manners. He has been around dogs, kids, and cats and is friendly with them all. Bluey is ready for his forever home, and his fosters are hoping to find that so Bluey gets all the love and attention he craves. Bluey is the perfect dog for you if you’re looking for a happy, loyal and loving pet.

Hercules is a handsome mixed-breed medium-sized dog who turns three on Valentine’s Day. Do you have kids? Good. According to his current owners, Hercules is fantastic with children of all ages and sizes. He’s been raised with other dogs and gets along with them well. He’s too interested in cats, so he’d like a feline-free home, please. Hercules is neutered and ready to find his new home.
