Love Mays of Danville was voted the 12th Region player of the year by the 12th Region Girls Basketball Coaches Association.

Mays was among six area players who were voted to the coaches association’s all-region team. Judie Mason, who led Danville to a 30-3 record and the regional finals, was voted the regional coach of the year by the coaches association.

All-region team

First team: Love Mays, Danville; Grace Mbugua, Danville Christian; Sydney Martin, Pulaski County; Ayden Smiddy, Southwestern; Taylynne Shearer, Rockcastle County.

Second team: Desiree Tandy, Danville; Kinsley Molden, Southwestern; Grace Bruner, Somerset; Anna Drakeford, Mercer County; Teigh Yeast, Mercer County.

Third team: Payton Acey, Southwestern; Chloe Dunn, Casey County; Kennedy Creekmore, McCreary Central; Claire Marshall, West Jessamine; Madeline Butcher, Pulaski County.

Coach of the Year: Judie Mason, Danville.

12th Region halls of fame

Four individuals and one team from area schools were inducted into 12th Region basketball halls of fame recently.

The 12th Region Boys Basketball Hall of Fame inducted three area players:

Jamie McGowan, Casey County — Averaged 28.9 points as a senior, finished with 1,458 career points; named to all-district and all-region teams in 1989 and ’90.

Joey Milburn, Mercer County — Had 1,929 career points and 1,123 career rebounds.

Daniel Ralston, Lincoln County — Four-year starter helped Lincoln win regional championships in 2007 and ’08; scored 1,044 career ponts.

The 12th Region Girls Basketball Hall of Fame inducted one coach and one team from area schools:

Greg Scholl, Casey County — Coached at Casey from 1979-1995, winning the program’s first district championship in 1994

2011-12 Lincoln County team — Became the first Lincoln girls or boys team to reach the semifinals of the state tournament; finished 26-10 with 45th District and 12th Region championships and wins over Clay County and Magoffin County in the first two rounds of the Girls Sweet 16.

Boyle, Mercer win archery titles

The Boyle County girls and Mercer County boys won 9th Region championships in their respective divisions Saturday in Nicholasville.

The Boyle girls, who were second in the region a year ago, edged Garrard County 1,946-1,932 for first place at East Jessamine.

• Raegan McGuffey of Boyle won the girls individual championship with a score of 292.

• Kelsey Dennis (289) of Mercer finished third, Abigail Fathergill (285) of Garrard was fifth, Sirenna Adams (283) of Boyle was seventh, • Eleanor Srsic (282) of Garrard was eighth, Sora Price (281) of Mercer was ninth and Abigail Anderson (278) of Mercer was 10th.

• Mercer (1,924) finished third and Lincoln County (1,910) was fifth in the team standings.

In the boys competition, Mercer outscored Southwestern 2,001-1,967 for first place.

• Troy Diaz-Ward of Mercer won the boys individual championship with a score of 296.

• Wade Stallard (292) of Boyle was second, Tyler Middleton (291) of Mercer was third, Austin Osborn (290) of Garrard was fourth, Matthew Devine (290) of Mercer was fifth, Hayden Martin (289) of Boyle tied for seventh and Aden Fathergill (287) of Boyle was 10th.

• Boyle (1,948) was third in the team standings.

The top boys and girls teams and the top three scorers not on those teams will advance to the KHSAA state tournament April 18 in Bowling Green.

Many area archers also will compete Friday and Saturday in the Kentucky National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament in Louisville.

Boyle softball ranked

Boyle County is ranked 13th in the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association preseason poll.

The Lady Rebels went 26-10 last season, winning their fifth consecutive 12th Region championship.

They were the only 12th Region team ranked in the top 25.

Boyle infielder Summer Ray tied for first place in the 12th Region coaches’ preseason rankings of the region’s best players.

Courtney Sandy of Boyle was fifth in the rankings, and Kennedy Neat of Casey County was tied for ninth.

watch list

Ten area baseball players are among 20 from the 12th Region on the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association’s preseason all-state watch list.

Coaches nominated their own players for the team.

The area players nominated:

Boyle County: Sage Dawson, Kason Myers, Cole Sims; Danville: Sam Matherly; Garrard County: Hayden Elleman, Merrick Graham, Tavian Neff, Beau Ray, Mason Reynolds; Mercer County: Evan Hart.
