Danville’s City Commission met on Monday, February 10, 2025, for their regular session. The meeting began with a prayer led by Commissioner Siri, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence to reflect on violence and compassion in the community.
Agenda approval and public comments
The commission unanimously approved the agenda as presented. During the public listening session, two citizens addressed the commission. Robin Ackerman, a dog trainer and new resident of Danville, expressed concerns about persistent barking dogs near her home. She suggested the use of no-bark collars to address the issue and proposed that the city could purchase the collars, with offenders reimbursing the city. Matt Montgomery, a Danville frequent visitor, inquired about police officer training related to senior citizens, suggesting a written program for officers. He also advocated for better respect for senior citizens in the community.
Approval of minutes and new appointments
The minutes from the previous meeting were approved. The commission also confirmed the appointment of Bo Eppinghoff to the joint Parks and Recreation Committee after a recommendation from both the city and the fiscal court.
Grant applications and resolutions
The commission reviewed two grant applications. The first, a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant for $12,480, aims to update design guidelines for signage in the historic district. A second CLG grant application, for $5,125, will fund a website to make the Architectural Review Board more accessible and educational. The commission voted to approve the first grant, with the second grant to be discussed in a future meeting.
Ordinance amendment postponed
The commission discussed the second reading of Ordinance 2045, which proposed a revision to the regular meeting schedule for the Board of Commissioners. After some debate, the commission voted to postpone the vote for further consideration. The topic will be revisited in the coming weeks.
City manager’s report
City Manager Coffee reminded the public of upcoming events, including Galentine’s on February 13 and Black History Month celebrations on February 18. He also provided an update on the city’s audit, which is expected to be published this week.
Public art discussion
A discussion on public art led by Commissioner Josh Morgan focused on the development of a sculpture for Windsor Park, with the commission planning to include funding for the project in the upcoming budget discussions. The commission emphasized the importance of involving the Art Center and seeking public input as part of the process.
New business and future projects
The commission addressed several utility projects, including the approval of resolutions for water meter upgrades and site access agreements for environmental work at Corning, Inc. They also discussed the acquisition of easements for the 11 Road Phase Two sewer project.
Adjournment
The meeting adjourned after completing the agenda, with the next meeting scheduled for two weeks from the date of this session.
