Summer Reading “All Together Now” continues at the Boyle County Public Library, providing families and people of all ages fun, affordable activities to enjoy this summer. This year, the library will offer many friendship-themed and summer camp-inspired activities. Exciting performances, outdoor movie nights, STEM programs, crafts, art exhibits, and storytimes are included in an extensive list of free events for a variety of ages. In addition to the activities, all patrons are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. Anyone who reads for 10 days and logs their reading will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. Prize bundles are on display in the library lobby. Information on how to register to participate can be found at BoylePubLib.org/SummerReading. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming Summer Reading events:

Move, Sing, and Play

On Friday mornings in June, discover active music making with others through singing, dancing, creative movement, and playing music games and easy instruments. This event will be held on Friday, June 23 at 10:30 AM in the Community Room. (Ages 6-11)

Starlight Movie Night

Watch a movie outside under the stars at the library every Friday evening in June and July. First, come early to join our Pre-show Party to play outdoor games. Then, set out your lawn chair in the Library Park to settle in to watch a film perfect for the whole family. The movie starts at dusk (around 9:00 PM) with an expected runtime of 90-120 minutes. Free popcorn will be available. More information, including film titles, are available in the event listing on the library’s website.

On June 23, watch an animated film about a team of shelter-pets in the DC Universe who were given super-powers. These crime-fighting animals must master their powers for a rescue mission when a superhero is kidnapped. Rated PG; 1 hr 45 min; 2022 (All ages)

On June 30, watch an animated movie about a legendary space ranger who embarks on an intergalactic adventure alongside some ambitious recruits. The team must learn to work together to escape the evil villain and his ruthless robot army. (Rated PG; 1 hr 45 min; 2022)

Mobile Dairy Classroom

Southwest Dairy Museum’s Mobile Dairy Classroom is a traveling milking parlor, featuring a live cow. On Saturday, June 24 at 10:00 AM, trained instructors will demonstrate how to milk a cow, describe how milk goes from the farm to the consumer, and answer questions from the audience. Instructors will teach audiences the characteristics and anatomy of dairy cows, the importance of dairy foods for good health, the modern milking process, and modern environmental and food safety practices. This event will be held in the Library Park. (All ages.)

Teen D&D

On Saturday, June 24 from 2:00-4:00 PM teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. Players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. This event will be held on the 5th Level on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. (Teens)

Adult D&D

The library offers a Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, June 25 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)

Summer Storytime

Join us at the library for summer storytime. Storytimes in June and July will be held outdoors in the Library Park on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. with ASL interpretation both days. Each week at Storytime we will read themed stories and have a sensory activity for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy. Our summer theme is “All Together Now,” and what better way to bring kids together than with summer camp activities. This week the theme for storytime is science camp. (Ages 1-5)

YA Mad Scientist

On Tuesday, June 27 at 2 p.m., tweens and teens are invited to experiment with a variety of materials to create their own unique slimes from scratch. Infuse your gelatinous concoction with your choice of colors, textures, add-ins, and even scents, then give a fun name to your newly-completed slime. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-18)

Summer Fiction Writing Workshop

On Tuesday, June 27 from 5:30-7 p.m., join local author Paul Stansbury for the final session of a 4-part workshop on recording and authoring your own fictional story. Using tools and lessons learned during the series, participants will work towards creating and receiving feedback on a piece of fictional writing, later shared in a published work. This workshop will be held in the Conference Room. (Ages 18+)

Kids Science Camp

On Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. this summer, the library will host activities based on different camp themes. Activities will include crafts, games, and STEM experiments. Each week will feature a different theme so kids can keep coming back for more. This week the theme is science camp, and on Wednesday, June 28, kids can use engineering skills to build Marshmallow Shooters and test how far they can make marshmallows fly. This event will be held outside the Library or in the Community Room, based on weather conditions. (Ages 6-11)

Thursday FunDay: Drumming Works – DrumPower

As part of the summer Thursday FunDays performance series, on Thursday, June 29 at 10:30 a.m. the library will bring Drumming Works to the Jennie Rogers Community Center. Presented by Joan Brannon of Drumming Works, DrumPower is an interactive presentation that shares the culture of West African Drumming through rhythm, song and story. Participants of all ages will explore rhythm in a powerful way to inspire and nurture your creative voice through drumming. ASL interpretation will be available at this event. Everyone is welcome to stop by the bookmobile before or after the performance. (All ages.)

KEEN Bridge Challenge

On Saturday, July 1 at 10 a.m., use K’NEX to construct your own bridge design, and then try it out using a bridge tester. KEEN instructors will go over different types of bridges, the importance of them in our everyday lives, and how we go through the engineering process of planning, designing, and construction to achieve a finished product.

The Kentucky Engineering Exposure Network (KEEN) is a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Program dedicated to teaching Kentucky’s youth about engineering. The KEEN Program provides KYTC Engineers to visit youth throughout the state to discuss the applications of math and science in real-world situations. They provide insights into the opportunities and challenges available to students pursuing studies in the field of engineering. This event will be held in the Library Park. (All ages.)
