It was a night for ending a streak, but not the one Danville wanted.
A dominant performance in the first half allowed Campbellsville to end a 24-year losing streak against Danville, controlling the first half for a 36-6 victory Thursday night at Admiral Stadium.
The Eagles put up five touchdowns and 395 yards of offense in the first half to defeat the Admirals for the first time in 10 meetings since their last win in the series in 1999.
Danville (0-6) got off to a strong start with an opening drive in which it took the ball inside the Campbellsville 1-yard line, but that was as far as the Admirals could get before the Eagles took over.
Danville coach Frank Parks Jr. said once that happened, the Admirals “lost their way and didn’t fight back,” saying they need to do what they are coached to do to respond to adversity but are not there at the moment.
“We didn’t do what we were coached to do,” Parks said.
The Admirals didn’t get on the scoreboard until the third quarter, when Enrique Gutierrez-Jacobs threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Demontrae Trumbo on the first series of the second half.
By then, running back Daniel Forbis and Campbellsville (7-0), which was ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, had left Danville behind.
Forbis accounted for almost half of his team’s total offense in the first half with 195 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He scored on runs of 24, 70 and 3 yards for the Eagles, who also had two other scoring plays of greater than 50 yards.
Quarterback Kace Eastridge added 141 passing yards and two touchdowns for Campbellsville, which took a 36-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Forbis scored in the first quarter on runs of 24 and 70 yards to give Campbellsville a 14-0 lead, then used a 33-yard run to the 10-yard line to set up a 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter. He carried the ball only once in the second half and finished with 200 yards on 10 attempts.
Eastridge had TD passes of 59 yards to Tashawn Hart and 71 yards to Deondre Weathers.
Danville kicker Kaleb Wilcher opened the second half with a successful onside kick, and he pulled off another one after the Admirals’ scored on their subsequent drive. Wilcher is now 5 for 5 in onside kick attempts this season, and he has had two in each of the Admirals’ last two games.
Campbellsville got the ball back on an interception after Wilcher’s second onside kick, and Danville was unable to score again.
Gutierrez-Jacobs was 8 for 19 for 14 passing yards. Trumbo caught four passes for 70 yards, while Braidin Baughman and Xzayvier Leavell had two catches each. Baughman, whose ejection from Danville’s previous game at Knox Central was overturned by the KHSAA following an appeal by the school, had 70 rushing yards on 21 carries.
The Admirals were outgained 466 yards to 182.
Danville begins its District 2A-6 schedule this Friday at Leslie County. Leslie (4-2) comes off an open date following a win over Paintsville two weeks ago. The Eagles have also beaten Floyd Central, Magoffin County and Harlan. The Admirals and Eagles met three times in the Class 2A playoffs between 2015 and 2018; Danville won all three games.
