Danville has taken some steps forward this season despite being unable to step into the winner’s circle, but its coach said that wasn’t the case Friday night.

Coach Frank Parks Jr. said the Admirals took a step back in their 50-13 loss to Breathitt County at Admiral Stadium.

Breathitt scored 36 points in the second quarter, including three touchdowns in the final 1:35 of the first half, to extend Danville’s loss streak.

Parks said he believed the Admirals had improved each game and carried what they did in practice to the field, but he said this game was a setback.

“We need to execute better and do what we were coached to do. We’ll just go back and work on Monday,” Parks said.

The Admirals wore their purple and gold jerseys for the team’s annual Bate Night in which it commemorates Bate High School, which served the community’s Black students until 1964, when students began attending Danville High School.

Danville (0-9, 0-3 District 2A-6) punted the ball to Breathitt (4-5, 2-1) on its first series and the Bobcats responded with three first downs and a drive that ended with the first of two touchdowns by Isaac Turner.

A Danville fumble led to a Breathitt touchdown early in the second quarter, and the Admirals appeared to have an answer for that score when Demontrae Trumbo found the end zone on a 72-yard pass from Braylon Guest, but that was wiped out by an illegal touching penalty and Breathitt soon scored for the second time in less than two minutes.

Breathitt led 29-0 when freshman Trinden Sellers put the Admirals on the scoreboard with a 79-yard run. However, the Bobcats scored on their very next offensive play when Turner ran for his second TD, then recovered an onside kick and scored once more before halftime on a pass from Dillon Stacy to Austin Barker to take a 44-7 lead.

Danville fought back in the second half, possessing the ball for the final six minutes of the third quarter and getting a stop on defense early in the fourth.

Chandon Carter recovered a fumble for the Admirals late in the game, and Guest threw his first career touchdown pass, a 38-yard pass to Trumbo in the closing seconds.

Danville will host Bardstown on Friday in its regular-season finale, and Breathitt wraps up the regular season at Prestonsburg.
