A tractor trailer shut down a portion of Alum Springs Road and the end of Alum Springs Cross Pike for about three hours Tuesday afternoon, after it took down an electric pole at about 3:22 p.m.

The tractor trailer driver, David Roth from Pekin, Illinois, attempted to turn right from Alum Springs Cross Pike onto Alum Springs Road, according to Mike Wilder, director of the Danville-Boyle County Emergency Management. Roth was following his GPS and it took him down the cross pike. In the process, it caught a line, causing damage to four poles, including one with a transformer. It also tore part of the siding and gutter off of a home on Alum Springs Road.

Homeowner Danny Daugherty, said he heard the damage as it happened.

“I thought an airplane had crashed into the house. That’s how loud it was,” he said. When he looked outside and saw the traffic backing up, he realized something had happened on the road.

The road was closed from Yates Road, near the entrance to the Alum Springs Convenience Center, to highway 1366, said Wilder.

The Boyle County Fire Department and the Boyle County Sheriff’s Department were called to help with traffic. InterCounty Energy and AT&T were called for the downed lines. The truck was undamaged.
