“Frosty: A Musical Adventure” is coming to the Boyle County Performing Arts Center on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

The one-hour production is inspired by the song “Frosty the Snowman.” The musical is written by Catherine Bush and Dax Dupuy. Bush has ties in Danville, having been involved with West T. Hill Community Theater and Pioneer Playhouse.

“Frosty: A Musical Adventure” has been touring since 2014 by The Barter Players, a group of professional artists who perform world-class theater for young people.

“It’s a huge crowd favorite, it’s toured all over the country and into Canada, and I’m so glad it’s finally coming to Danville, because that’s where I got my start in theater,” Bush said.

The show is about a young boy coming to New York looking for something, and a snowman comes to life taking him on adventures around the city. The boy thinks he’s an orphan, but the snowman takes him on a journey to find his family.

“We like to celebrate family, we like to celebrate people being kind to each other, we like to celebrate doing the right thing, and I think this play celebrates all those things, and people leave having laughed a lot and feeling good,” Bush said. “It’s a lot of fun and a lot of heart, and it’s the perfect show for families and school groups to see at Christmas.”

Bush said the play is for people of all ages, and that people will love the show’s heart and message.

“I had adults who have just lost their mind over this show,” Bush said. “Kids will love it, but I think adults will be surprised at the end and the twist, and I think they’ll love it too.”

Bush lived in Danville from 1986 to 1993 and performed at West T. Hill. She then went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, and fell in love with playwriting.

Since then, Pioneer Playhouse commissioned Bush to write “A Jar Full of Fireflies,” based on the filming of “Raintree County” in Danville. West T. Hill has performed many of Bush’s plays, including “I’ll Never be Hungry Again,” a spoof of “Gone with the Wind;” and “Nancy Drew the Musical,” a spoof of the Nancy Drew books, and others.

Bush has now been writing plays since 1995. She lives in Abingdon, Virginia and works as Barter Theatre’s playwright-in residence.

When Bush heard about the new BCPAC, she knew she wanted to get “Frosty” there so her friends in town could see it.

BCPAC Director Jimmy Cornn said he got the idea to bring the play to Danville from West T. Hill Director Karen Logue. Cornn got in touch with the show’s tour coordinator, and they found a date for it.

Cornn said he expects around 300 people to attend, and that ticket sales have been good. He said they expect a large number of community members to attend, and that they don’t have a matinee for students for this show.

The Boyle County Middle School cheerleaders are hosting cookies, crafts and other activities with Santa prior to the musical in the Middle School cafeteria. Cornn said it’s a separate event with a separate charge, but he hopes people will go see the Frosty show after that event, since the BCPAC is also at the middle school.

The BCPAC is a new performance venue that brings in touring shows mainly for families and children. It has a full schedule of shows this year, and can also be used as a rental venue. The 500-seat auditorium has been used for meetings, pageant events, and informative talks.
