The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, online resources, and numerous services for the community. Programs often include weekly storytimes, crafting programs, gaming events, and art exhibits. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

Karate for Kids

On Monday in Nov. 27 at 3:30 p.m., join instructor Shinji Matsuda from US Yoshukai Karate to learn karate for beginners. Learn from a 4th degree Master with years of experience teaching kids. No prior experience is needed. Registration is required so we can know participants’ skill and age, and waivers are required to participate. Space is limited. More information can be found on the library’s website. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 4-12)

Baby Storytime

Join us on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. for a storytime just for babies. Each week, Ms. Rachael will read themed stories and have a sensory activity for babies from birth to 18 months and their caregivers to enjoy. Baby Storytime will be held in the Community Room, with the books & theme changing each week. (Ages 0-18 months)

YA Creative Club: Crafternoon

Join us each week for YA (Young Adult) Creative Club, where tweens and teens can try out fun creative projects, learn new artistic techniques, and meet creatively-minded friends. On Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 4-5:30 p.m., you can choose what you create at Crafternoon! Get inspired as you explore the library’s collection of artistic, writing, and crafting materials, and let your imagination guide you to create something new and exciting to take home at the end of the day. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-18)

DIY Ugly Holiday Sweaters

On Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 6-8 p.m., we’ll be turning normal sweaters into holiday versions or jazzing up existing ones. A limited stock of sweaters will be available, or you can bring your own to work on. Decorate yours however you like and use it all season long! This craft will involve iron-on transfers, stitch-on baubles, and more. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

Morning & Afternoon Storytime

Join us for Storytime at the library! Each week we will read stories and have a themed sensory activity for young children to enjoy. Morning Storytime will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM. Afternoon Storytime will be held on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. in the youth department. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome to attend with their caregivers. (Ages 1-5)

Kids Fall Fun: Graham Cracker Art

Join us for some fall fun this month! On Wednesday, Nov. 29 from 4-5 p.m., we’ll make edible art. Get inspired by famous works of art or create your own — on a graham cracker! This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 6-10)

YA Gaming Guild: Board Game Bash

Calling all gamers! Join us at the library on Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. for YA Gaming Guild, where tweens and teens can relax, play games, have some snacks, and hang out with other gamers. This week, explore the library’s huge collection of board and card games. Play some old classics, like Uno or Scrabble, or try out some newer games, like Wingspan, Everdell, or The Isle of Cats. New and returning gamers are always welcome. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-18)

Pictures with Santa

Santa will visit the library on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. Kids of all ages are invited to take a photo with the jolly elf. Bring your camera and a smile for your visit! The line will close at noon, so plan accordingly. (If you’re in line by noon, you’ll get to see Santa.) This free event will be held in the Reading Room. After you visit Santa, we invite you to enjoy free Christmas-themed craft activities at the Yuletide Festival. Be sure to stop by the Friends of the Library’s book sale to buy your loved ones our favorite kind of gift – books! (All ages)

Yuletide Festival

On Dec. 2, experience the sights and sounds of a late 19th-century Christmas at the Yuletide Festival. In the morning, from 10 a.m. to noon, costumed actors from Center Stage Theatrics will lead crafts and activities for all ages on the fifth level of the library. Later in the afternoon, from 2-4 p.m., the fun continues in the Community Room at the Victorian-era Tea Party, where Center Stage Theatrics will have actors in-character as Victorian era party-goers to talk about the history of Victorian yuletide parties and show how to play parlor games of the time. There will be a selection of tea from Elmwood Inn Fine Teas as well as cookies, cakes, and finger sandwiches. Space at the tea party is limited. Revolutionary Threads Exhibit

This month, the library is hosting the Revolutionary Threads: Uniforms of Revolutionary War Patriot-Soldier Ancestors exhibit. Revolutionary Threads was organized by the Transylvania Chapter NSDAR to honor America250, the multi-year National Commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of American Independence 1776. The exhibit features uniforms from the 1776 2nd South Carolina Infantry; Fifers and Drummers; Green Mountain Rangers; General Washington’s Life Guard; and more. Revolutionary Threads is provided with generous support of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of Cartmell House, Pennye and Bob Willcutt, and members of Transylvania Chapter NSDAR, Lexington. The exhibit will be on display in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery at the library through November 28, 2023.
