Library to host “Betty Boyle’s Downtown Danville Adventure Quest”

Summer Reading “Adventure Begins at Your Library” is in full swing at the Boyle County Public Library, providing families and people of all ages fun, affordable activities to enjoy this summer. This year, the library is offering many adventure-themed activities. Exciting performances, outdoor movie nights, live animals, crafts, and storytimes are included in an extensive list of free events for a variety of ages.

In addition to the activities, patrons are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. Anyone who reads for 12 days and logs their reading using Beanstack will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. Prize bundles are on display in the library lobby. Information on how to register to participate can be found at BoylePubLib.org/SummerReading. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming Summer Reading events:

Animal Petting Zoo

On Saturday, June 15 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, visit a petting zoo hosted by Honey Hill Farm, featuring 30 different live animals! Get up close to the animals and say hello. Animals attending include chickens, rabbits, ducks, sheep, goats, alpacas, a cow, and a mini horse or donkey. This event will be held in the Library Parking Lot. (All ages)

 

Kids Bubblepalooza

Imagine what you can create at the library! Bubbles aren’t only for bath time or playing with. Bubbles can be for art too! On Monday, June 17 at 2:30 PM, come get creative as we teach you some techniques to make great bubble art.  Make sure you wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy. This program will be held in the Library Park. (Ages 6-10)

 

Summer Storytime

Join us at the library for summer storytime. Storytime is where we sing, play, and read! Storytimes in June and July will be held outside in the Library Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM. Each week we will read themed stories and have an activity for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy. (Ages Birth-5)

 

Adventure Escape Room

Join us for an escape room adventure on Tuesday, June 18 from 11:00 AM-7:30 PM. An evil wizard has turned your village to stone! You learn of an artifact that will revive the villagers. It is hidden in a forgotten library in the depths of Faron Woods. Upon entering the Woods, you trigger a booby trap setting a timer to your task. Using each of your unique skills, your group must obtain the artifact before the time runs out. In this escape room, each player is assigned a character that has skills and weaknesses. Players will need to work together using their unique skills to solve the puzzle. Register for an available time slot to participate. YA NERF Battle

On Wednesday, June 19 from 6:00-7:30 PM, gather your friends and join us for a thrilling, fast-paced indoor NERF battle among the library stacks! Work as a team in Capture the Flag or eliminate your fellow players in Battle Royale. No need to bring your own supplies. Participants will use NERF blasters and darts provided by the library. This event will be held on the 5th Level. (Ages 11-17)

 

Third Thursday Book Club

In June the book club will be reading The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. Join the book discussion on Thursday, June 20 at 10:30 AM in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Thursday FunDay: Cool Critters

As part of the summer Thursday FunDays performance series, on Thursday, June 20 at 10:30 AM the library will bring Cool Critters to Gravely Hall at Danville High School. Join us for hands-on animal fun! You’ll learn about different animals and their importance in nature. Cool Critters Outreach is a fun, interactive, and educational way of looking at reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, mammals and other amazing animals. It is an opportunity to get an up-close, personal look at the fascinating world of snakes, lizards, dragons, spiders, and more. Most of the animals are rescues taken in and adopted. This event is free to attend. You can also visit the Bookmobile before and after the show. ASL interpretation will be available at this event. (All ages)

 

Third Thursday: “Betty Boyle’s Downtown Danville Adventure Quest”

On Thursday, June 20 from 5:00-8:00 PM at Downtown Danville’s Third Thursday Night, you’re invited to adventure through Danville in this interactive mystery adventure! Use your smartphone to follow Betty Boyle as she tries to figure out who sabotaged her plane and why. To get started, visit the library’s booth next to Chase Bank. Then, throughout the evening you will visit various businesses as you gather clues using your phone and the Beanstack app to figure out who sabotaged Betty Boyle’s plane. If you can find the right culprit, you’ll be entered to win a special prize!

If you can’t make it to the Third Thursday event, you can still enjoy the adventure from June 20-27. Simply find the Betty Boyle sign at the Boyle County Public Library or at The Derby Shoppe & Raggs to begin, then scan the QR code with your smartphone to start your adventure around town. Adventure Short Fiction Writing Workshop

On Thursday, June 20 from 5:30-7:00 PM, the library will host the third session of a 4-part writing workshop with a focus on creating stories in the genre of Adventure. Led by local author Paul Stansbury, this is a hands-on instructional workshop designed to help writers develop their skills. This program will be held weekly in the Conference Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Yoga

On Fridays in June and July, dive into a transformative experience where you’ll learn the art of harmonizing the breath, balance, stability, and flexibility. Through guided breathwork, balance poses, and soothing stretches, discover a deeper connection to your body and mind. Join us for an invigorating yet calming journey toward inner peace and well-being. This class will be held on Fridays at 11:00 AM in the Community Room. Registration is required. Starlight Movie Night

Watch a movie outside under the stars at the library on Friday evenings in June and July. First, come early to join our Pre-show Party to play outdoor games. Then, set out your lawn chair in the Library Park to settle in to watch a movie perfect for the whole family. Movie starts at dusk (around 9:00 PM) with an expected runtime of 90-120 minutes. Free popcorn will be available. More information, including film titles, are available in the event listing on the library’s website.

On Friday, June 21, watch an animated movie about a young girl who wishes on a star and gets a more direct answer than she bargained for when a trouble-making star comes down from the sky to join her. Rated PG; 1 hr 35 min; 2023 (All ages)

 

Judy Schaefer Art Exhibit 

The Boyle County Public Library is hosting an art exhibit featuring works by local artist Judy Schaefer. The exhibit, which features still life and landscape art, will be on display at the library in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery through June 26.
