Great American Picnic returns in May

The 2025 Great American Picnic, a signature event of the Great American Brass Band Festival (GABBF), will bring new updates, extended hours, and a continued focus on family-friendly fun when it returns to Centre College’s campus on Saturday, May 31.

The popular picnic table rental experience allows festival goers to reserve an 8-foot table and eight chairs for the duration of Saturday’s music programming. This year, tables will be available starting at 8:45 a.m.—a first for the event—giving attendees the opportunity to enjoy the space for the entire day.

Attendees are encouraged to decorate their tables according to one of three judged categories: “Brass in the Bluegrass,” “Best in Business,” and “Best of the Wildcard.” Judging begins at 4 p.m., with winners announced at 7 p.m.

Decorations must be family-friendly, and no political, violent, or otherwise inappropriate themes will be allowed. Renters are asked not to paint or damage tables, which must be returned in good condition.

This year, changes in seating areas have been made to accommodate dancing near the stage. Tables will be placed in two main areas: the back and side of the lawn. Organizers note that some trees on Centre’s campus have been removed, limiting shade in certain sections. While renters can submit seating preferences with their order, final placement will be assigned by GABBF staff.

In another key change for 2025, Walnut Street will remain closed to all vehicular traffic throughout the festival. Drivers will not be permitted to drop off decorations, though designated drop-off zones will be available and communicated via email following table reservations.

Outside alcohol will not be allowed on the premises in accordance with city ordinances and Kentucky state law. However, beer and other alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase on-site. Per KRS 243.260, alcohol may only be sold by the glass.

While table reservations are non-refundable, the event will proceed rain or shine, with any postponements due to severe weather left to the discretion of festival staff.

Table placement details will be emailed to purchasers following their reservation. Parking passes are not included with the table rental, but attendees are encouraged to consider a Brass Pass for additional amenities.
