Ducks Unlimited will host its first Greenwing event at Millennium Park on Saturday. 

The event is from 10 a.m.-1p.m. with free admission. 

The event is geared toward kids with the goal of getting them interested and engaged in nature.

It’s a way for kids to get “away from the TV, Xbox and their phones,” Ducks Unlimited East Kentucky Regional Chairman Mike Hough said. 

At the event, kids will have the opportunity to assemble hen nesting tubes and wood duck boxes. 

“We wanted to get the local kids and give them a hands-on experience,” Hough said.

The wood duck boxes were fabricated by the advanced manufacturing class at the Kentucky School for the Deaf. 

Ducks Unlimited is a nonprofit organization, with a local chapter in Danville. It is dedicated to the conservation of wetlands and associated upland habitats for waterfowl, other wildlife and people. 

Greenwing is a program within Ducks Unlimited with 60,000 participating kids. The program focuses on caring about and loving nature and protecting wetlands. 

There will be conservation officers present to talk attendees at the event. Information will be available for those who are interested in getting involved with Ducks Unlimited. 

“If they are interested in joining, we would love to talk to them about that,” Hough said. “We just want people to learn more about Ducks Unlimited and what we stand for.”

In addition to Ducks Unlimited, the Central Kentucky Retriever Club will also be there with dogs. 

Hough said if there are 20 or 30 kids at the event, “that would be absolutely fantastic.” The event is geared to be a one-on-one experience where all the kids can participate and build together. 

Hough said he is just hoping for a good turnout, good weather and for everyone to enjoy themselves. He hopes that after this event, the cycle will continue and more Ducks Unlimited events will come to Danville.
