In the article titled “Alumni turn out to explain why losing mascot means more than meets the eye,” which ran on April 19, 2017, a quote from LaKeysha Singleton about “silent, not overt racism” was mischaracterized.
Singleton’s full quote is, “The disparities in education, poverty, the criminal justice system and other sectors of society continue to be a plague in a country that promises so much, yet guarantees so little. This is evidenced by the lack of African-American representation in the Danville Schools administration. It is silent and not overt racism that exists in our schools, employment, poverty, healthcare, prison systems, immigrant communities and other sectors of our society. It also permeates our society in ways we don’t even realize.”
