Mysterious minds

Friday, an important annual event is offered to the community through Kentucky School for the Deaf. The end-of-year project for high school visual arts students will hit Kerr Hall with various works on exhibit.
Not only will artworks don the walls, but the student artists — as part of the project — will be standing by, ready to discuss their pieces.
“Students come up with the gallery title, make professional invitation cards that we mail out …” says Alex Meckes, an arts instructor with the school. “They do everything, from hang their own artwork, create title cards for each piece, and stand by their display to discuss their artwork with all visitors.”
The gallery event, called The Mysterious Mind of an Artist, will only be from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, so anyone interested in checking out — and possibly purchasing — pieces from the students have a limited window in which to do so.
“We will have refreshments provided by our culinary department, and secret critics — volunteers — who will come through and ask questions,” Meckes says.
Also during the gallery, a silent auction will be held for those students who do choose to sell their work.
“Many opt out of the auction and keep their artwork, but it’s a great way for students to earn money since they keep 100 percent of the profit.”
She says last year, a student sold a painting for $150.
“At the end of the gallery, we have a Critics Choice winner and a Gallery Favorite winner.”

One student’s piece, “Mad Hatter,” has already been purchased by a KSD staff member for $50.
