Agrees with Centre on Fifth Street parking lot

Dear Editor,
I have to agree with with James Leahey at Centre about the reasons for not putting a hedge on Main Street in front of the parking lot. I think the brick and iron fence is attractive and well done. It certainly is not an eyesore.
If I used that lot on a regular basis I would welcome the fact that it is clearly visible from Main Street and the Speedway across the street. I would feel safe going to my car at night. Also, walking along Main Street, I like that there is no hedge that could hide someone whose intentions may not be in my best interest.
I see nothing wrong with just leaving the grassy strip and the nice brick and iron wall as it is. I walk along there frequently and it feels open, inviting and safe.
As for putting up anything along Fifth Street, the street and sidewalk are too narrow and it would not give those who like to walk downtown enough room to walk safely.
I would also like to add that Julie Wagner’s comment that “the purpose … is to sort of memorialize what used to be there” makes no sense. There was a gas station there and two or three houses, what’s to memorialize?
