The scene of a fatal crash about a month ago will soon be getting new signage.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has scheduled new signs for the intersection of Ky. 33 and Faulkner Lane (Ky. 1896) — where three were killed and one was severely injured in a one-vehicle wreck on July 21.

“The District 7 Traffic Engineering staff performed a field review at the location of Ky. 1896 and Ky. 33,” said Natasha Lacy, KTC public information officer, via email. “In addition, the accident history for the past five years was evaluated. … Safety is a top priority with the Transportation Cabinet.”

Through this, Lacy said, “it was determined that the changes for signage were warranted.”

A work order for the changes was submitted in August.

“The work is a priority and will be completed when we receive the notice to proceed,” she said.

Changes include:

• replacement of the “stop ahead” sign on Ky. 1896, as the road approaches Ky. 33;

• replacement of the stop sign at the intersection;

• installation of two directional arrows on Ky. 33, directly across from the end of Ky. 1896; and

• relocation a green sign pointing drivers in the direction of Northpoint Training Center.

Jacob Frick, 17, Matt Darland, 21, and Briana Coffman, 21, were killed and Trevor Thompson, 20, was seriously injured after the car they were in left Ky. 1896 and collided with a stone fence on Ky. 33 on July 21.

According to investigators, Darland was driving a 2013 Ford Mustang along Ky. 1896 when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Ky. 33. The car crossed Ky. 33 and collided with the wall before catching on fire.
