Both Danville Independent and Boyle County Schools have made changes to the schools’ calendar due to recent snow days after a heavy snow. 

Danville Independent 

Students in the Danville Schools have to attend two extra days in February to make up for a portion of the four snow days the district has dealt with since returning on Jan. 3.

On Monday night, the board voted and approved having students attend Feb. 16 and 19, which were initially non-instructional days. Feb. 16 was a professional development day and Feb. 19 is President’s Day.

At a later date, the board will have to make a decision regarding the other two days the district missed.

Director of Pupil Personnel Ed McKinney recommended to the board to also have students attend on March 22 and then use district “bank” time to cover the fourth day.

“We’re allowed to take bank time,” he said, explaining that the district was required to attend 170 days, but Danville goes 171; the district also attends more hours per day than required.

“If Danville Independent misses six, eight, 10 days, we’re probably looking at a bill in legislation to relax the 170 day rule,” he said.

McKinney said it was possible for that discussion to go ahead  before the February meeting, because of how other districts were impacted by the weather.

Keith Look, superintendent of Danville Independent Schools, said it was also good for the district’s last day to be determined as quickly as possible, because it could impact the construction schedules in the works for the summer.

The district was out of school for snow on Jan. 12 and 16-18.

Students are scheduled to be out of school March 22 and 23, planning days and professional development days; April 2-6, for spring break; and April 27, a professional development day. The last day of school is scheduled for May 24, with closing day on May 25.

Boyle County Schools 

The last day of school for the 2017-2018 school year has changed to May 25 for students in the Boyle County Schools, due to the snow days they’ve faced since the district was scheduled to return on Jan. 4.

Instead, it was a snow day, delaying the return from winter break to Jan. 5.

This year, said Superintendent Mike LaFavers, the district has had four snow days — Jan. 4, 8, 12, and 17 — and two non-traditional days, which are days where students complete work at home. Those were Jan. 16 and 18.

LaFavers said on Monday the district was trying to stay away from the first week of June. Because of that, the Board of Education approved a plan Thursday night to attend school on President’s Day, Feb. 19. The day was initially a day off for students.

“We scheduled that as a day off (initially), but made sure to make it known that we would take that day, if we had snow days,” LaFavers said on Monday.

The other dates have not changed — students will be off on March 16, a staff development day, and everyone is off April 2-6, for spring break.

The last day for students is May 25, closing day for teachers is May 29.
