MERCER HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

HARRODSBURG — Natalie Berry Marshall and The Right Guys Band are planning a Habitat Hoedown to help raise funds for Mercer County Habitat for Humanity. The band will feature members Winston May, Brad Logan and William Marshall. They have “special appearances” lined up by Kitty Wells, Minnie Pearl, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, as well as local favorite Big Mamma Marshall, and other surprises.

The hoedown will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Southside Christian Church, 1950 Danville Road in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Tickets are $12 and $5 for children under 10. To purchase tickets, call (859) 734-5086, contact a board member, or e-mail Habitatmercer@gmail.com.

Habitat for Humanity Mercer County is a nonprofit organization of volunteers who work with a family in need of a home of their own. People who are in need of a home apply and when selected agree to partner with Habitat on the building of their home. The family has a 20-year  mortgage that they pay. This is usually cheaper than the rent they are paying for their apartment or home.

The local habitat uses many volunteers for labor and donated materials when possible, but must purchase some materials and pay for skilled labor for the building when donations are not available. The biggest expense now is the need to extend the road at the Quail Run subdivision, where many of the habitat home have been built.

When Pheasant Drive is extended at a cost of over $60,000, there will be room for six more homes to be built. Habitat is hopeful the street will be completed this fall, then the next cycle of family selections will begin.

Mercer County Habitat for Humanity has been building homes since 1990 and has built 24 homes with the help of local people who were willing to give generously to help transform the lives of children and families in need of a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.
