FRANKFORT — Thanks to the generosity of fellow Kentuckians, kinship families in Casey County received care packages of clothing, toiletries, and other items to start the new year.

“Matt and I sincerely appreciate all those who donated winter clothing, supplies and gift cards during the ‘Kinship Kentucky Christmas’ initiative to benefit kinship families across the state,” said First Lady Glenna Bevin. “We have truly been overwhelmed by your generosity, and we are excited to share your gifts with the grandparents, relatives, and other caretakers you have come alongside to support.”

On Friday, Chris and Alicia Johnson, who are spearheading the governor and first lady’s adoption and foster care system reform efforts in the commonwealth, delivered items collected through the recent holiday donation drive.

The Johnsons distributed the donated items to kinship families through the Alternative Parent Action Council (APAC) in Casey County.

“We are grateful for all those who contributed to our ‘Kinship Kentucky Christmas’ efforts,” said Chris Johnson, special advisor for the Governor’s Office of Faith and Community Based Initiatives. “There are approximately 96,000 Kentucky children who are currently living with family members that are not their mother or father, and it is important that we support these children and the family members who step up to care for them. These gifts will make a real difference in the lives of some of these kids.”

Items collected during the donation drive included coats, hats, gloves/mittens, scarves, winter clothes, socks, underwear, shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, diapers, baby wipes, laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies.
