Governor’s Cup competition at Woodlawn

The 23rd Regional Governor’s Cup competition will be held at Woodlawn Elementary School on Monday, Feb. 25, and Saturday, March 2.

The academic event is sponsored by the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition.

The Governor’s Cup features eight events including Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall team events; individual testing events in math, science, social studies, arts and humanities and language arts; and an individual written composition event which requires students to respond to a writing task.

There will be 193 students competing from: Junction City, Perryville and Woodlawn Elementary schools, Danville Christian Academy and Toliver Intermediate School.

Other area schools competing are — Crab Orchard, Highland and Hustonville, McKinney, Stanford and Waynesburg elementary schools from Lincoln County; and Camp Dick Robinson, Lancaster and Paint Lick elementary schools from Garrard County.

 

Statewide tornado drill planned for March 6

The Kentucky Department of Emergency Management will be performing a Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 6. The time is set for 10:07 a.m.. The Danville-Boyle County Emergency Management Agency (BCEM) will activate the severe weather outdoor sirens for this test. In addition, they will also perform the normal test on the first Friday of the month (March 1, at noon). This is an excellent opportunity for businesses, schools, factories and individuals to test their personal plans in the event of a tornado. Mike Wilder, director of BCEM, will attend one of the schools in the county to observe the drill.

Local blood drives in early March

Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) is encouraging Kentuckians to roll up their sleeves, donate blood and help Kentucky patients. As a thank you, those who register to give blood at the drive below will receive a special KBC T-shirt.

Upcoming local blood drives:

• Danville Walmart on Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the KBC Bloodmobile, 100 Walton Ave.
• City of Danville on Wednesday, March 6 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Boyle County Public Library in the Heart of Danville Community Room, 307 W. Broadway St.

Blood donors must be 17 years old or 16 with parental consent; weigh at least 110 pounds; be in general good health; show a photo ID; and meet additional requirements. Donors who are 16 must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.

Al-Anon offers group meetings twice weekly

Al-Anon Family Group meetings are held 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays and 10-11:30 a.m. Saturdays every week at First Christian Church, 555 E. Lexington Avenue in Danville. Please use the rear basement door for entrance.

The weekly meetings serve to offer help and hope for friends and families of alcoholics.
