Main Street’s streetscape project continues

Progress continues to be made on replacing the sidewalk and curb on the north side of Main Street from Fourth Street and is heading toward Fifth Street. Bluegrass Contracting and its subcontractors have finished demolition of the old sidewalk in front of the Art Center of Bluegrass (formerly known as the Community Arts Center).
They have also completed the entrances for the arts center and Danville Bike and Fitness, said Danville City Engineer John Cassell.
During the demolition and excavation, Danville Municipal Utilities Department was also able to install water meters and repaired a sewer break near Tut’s restaurant at 415 W. Main, Cassel said. Construction workers installed a 15-inch storm drain across the entrance to Danville City Hall, and put in extensions for smaller drainage.
They are currently pouring the sidewalk in front of Tut’s and WKYB radio station.
Cassel said most of the “flatwork” and clean-up will be completed by the end of this week. Lawhorn Electric will install new streetlights on both sides of Main Street once the poles arrive, which is scheduled for Aug. 16, he said.
In addition to the new sidewalk, contractors will build a porch with railings in front of Tut’s in order to provide accessibility (required by the Americans with Disabilities Act) to the business, and landscaping will be added. It will be similar to the one on Main Street in front of Innovative Interiors, near Burke’s Bakery, Cassel said. “It’s part of the streetscape master plan.”
He said, “The project is almost over so we ask pedestrians and motorists to continue using caution in the area. The remaining work may be more spaced out so hopefully we’ll be getting back to a normal pattern soon.”
