This summer the Boyle County Public Library introduced Beanstack — a fun virtual way to participate in reading challenges. During the months of October and November, the library invites patrons to get to know their library by participating in its latest Beanstack Challenge, “Fall in Love with Your Library.” 

This all-ages seasonal challenge is designed specifically to help patrons better familiarize themselves with the numerous services and programs the library has to offer. From now until the end of November library patrons can unlock activity badges by attending programs, utilizing a new service, and even by learning something new about the library. 

“We wanted to give patrons another chance to use Beanstack and the badges in an enjoyable new way this fall that focuses on completing activities instead of just reading,” said Youth Services Librarian Kinsey Hisle. “We got a great response to Beanstack this summer, especially the aspect of earning badges. It is fun to unlock a new one and the display on the app makes you motivated to keep earning more.”

Weekly prize drawings will be held for those who have unlocked badges. Examples of how to earn badges include following the library on Instagram, checking out a movie on DVD, and chatting with the library using the new instant chat service. The more unlocked badges a patron has, the better chance they have to win one of the drawings.

“Families are very busy so we wanted the program to be something they could participate in at their own pace, which is one of the reasons the prizes will be weekly drawings throughout the program,” Hisle said. “We look forward to seeing what activity badges are the most popular for people to complete.”

Patrons have numerous virtual programs to participate in to earn activity badges as well, including KidStir, Cooking Skills for Tweens and Teens, First Four Fridays, and Grown Up Game Night. Programs are available for a wide variety of ages and on various virtual formats including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Discord, allowing anyone to earn program participation badges.

Prizes for the challenge include gift cards to local businesses. Patron can see a visual representation of their participation through a colorful display being set up by the main staircase in the library. Youth Services Assistant Amber Wesley is designing a fall tree with falling leaves. As more people participate in the ““Fall in Love with Your Library” challenge, colorful leaves will be added to the tree. By November, the tree will show many leaves for all of the people who completed badges in the challenge.
