Lena Margaret Worthington
1925 – 2021
Lena Margaret Worthington, 96, died July 15, 2021, in Hampstead, North Carolina. Margaret was born in Parksville, Kentucky on February 9, 1925, to the late Alford and Rosie Pittman Chambers. She completed the 11th grade at Parksville High School, where she won the school’s spelling bee. Margaret married Obie Worthington, Jr in 1944. Margaret and her husband, Obie, were both founding members of Immanuel Baptist Church. Obie died in 2005 of stroke-related complications and Margaret relocated to be near family in Hampstead, where she remained until her death. Margaret contracted polio at the young age of five and overcame many obstacles throughout her life. She retired after 30 years from Palm Beach Coat factory in Danville, Kentucky. Margaret loved being near her son, Ron, and enjoyed many holiday gatherings with family at his home. Her favorite hobby was bingo and she played it three times a week. She also enjoyed nice clothes and dressing every day at the nursing home. She was addicted to the nursing home’s beauty shop and would under no circumstances miss her weekly Tuesday appointment or Monday night church service. Margaret insisted on using her bingo winnings to “help” her son pay for her weekly hair appointments. In addition to her parents, Margaret is predeceased by her husband Obie Worthington Jr; many brothers and sisters; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Worthington, who died at birth; and her son Richard Allen Worthington, who died in 1996. Margaret is survived by her son, Ron Worthington; sister Bessie Smith; grandchildren Ronald Dale Worthington, Darcye Worthington, Dryone Worthington, Kay Worthington Simpson, and Bria Worthington Lundy; and her great-grandchildren, Michielle Worthington, Kayla Worthington Maynard, Emily Shropshire, Christopher Allen Worthington, Caleb Worthington, Brandon Worthington, Mykah Worthington, and Paige Michelle Worthington Bottoms; and one great-great grandchild, Brently Kyle Crank. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm, Monday, July 26, 2021 at Bellevue Cemetery. Anyone wishing to attend are more than welcome to do so.
