The Boyle County Public Library is wrapping up its summer programs with both in-person and virtual events. Weekly events include virtual and in-person storytimes, ukulele lessons, and Yoga for Kids. Here is a closer look at some of the library’s upcoming activities in the final week of the Summer Reading program:

• DIY Friday

Patrons are invited to learn basic and advanced do-it-yourself skills from a DIY veteran. This month the topic will be “Essential Knots.” The video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel on Friday, July 23 at 5 p.m.

• Teen D&D

On Saturday, July 24 from 2-4 p.m. teens are invited to play the greatest role-playing game from the Wizards of the Coast. At this in-person event, teens (ages 13-18) can venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. • Virtual Adult D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a virtual Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets on two Sundays each month. Adults (ages 18+) can join a virtual campaign on Sunday, July 25 at noon or 4:30 p.m. Sessions are run via several web-based services such as Roll20.net and Discordapp.com. • Tween LibCrates Discussion

The theme for the July Tween LibCrates is “Endangered Animals” and the featured book is The Lost Rainforest: Mez’s Magic by Eliot Schrefer. On Monday, July 26 at 4 p.m. tweens (ages 9-13) are invited to an in-person discussion of the book. The discussion will be held in the Conference Room at the library. For those unable to attend the in-person session, an unboxing video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel on July 26th. Responses to the discussion questions can be emailed to Youth Services Librarian Kinsey Hisle at khisle@boylepublib.org to be featured in the video. The next Tween LibCrate selection will be available for pickup beginning September 1st.

• Teen LibCrates Talk

On Monday, July 26 at 6 p.m. teens (ages 13-18) are invited to join an in-person discussion of Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore. Teens can share thoughts about the book and hang out with friends. The book discussion will be held at the library on the 5th level. The next Teen LibCrate selection will be available for pickup beginning September 1st.

• Tween STEM

Tweens (ages 9-13) can test their STEM skills with an at home experiment! In July, learn how to make moon sand that always stays the perfect texture for molding and building whatever you can imagine. Kits can be picked up on Tuesday, July 27 at 10 a.m.

• STEM for Kids

Kids (ages 5-8) can have some science summer fun with the library’s STEM kit for kids. In July, kids can learn how to make fireworks in a jar and gorgeous rainbows with gobstoppers. Kits can be picked up on Tuesday, July 27 at 10 a.m.

• Axe Throwing for Teens

On Thursday, July 29 from 5 to 7 p.m., teens are invited to try throwing axes in a custom-built trailer where they can compete against friends to see who can hit the bullseye. At this free event, instructors from Bluegrass Karting & Events will be present to guide participants in how to throw.

Registration and a signed waiver are required to participate. Waivers may be picked up at the library or downloaded from the event listing on the library’s website. No open-toed shoes are permitted. This event will adhere to state and federal health guidelines, including but not limited to facial masks and social distancing.

Tickets are based on 15-minute appointments and each appointment can accommodate six participants. This event is for ages 14-18, but all minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

• Virtual Field Trip: Heartland Veterinary Hospital

In this Virtual Field Trip, we will get a behind the scenes look at Heartland Veterinary Hospital, located in Danville. Join us as we learn what an exam on a dog looks like, how to read a dog’s x-ray, and meet some dogs. This video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel on Saturday, July 31 at noon.
