Downtown church tour was fabulous

Dear Editor,
When we think about what makes this town so special, we can look at events such as the Arts Commission’s Historic Downtown Church Tour Sunday, Jan. 15.
The weather was less than desirable, yet 50 people joined us to trek around to eight of our beautiful worship spaces. We were treated to wonderful organ concerts, stories of how these congregations have grown and built through over 200 years of life in downtown and memories of growing up in their church communities.
The Arts Commission wants to thank the churches who opened their doors Sunday and arranged such informative presentations: Second Street Christian Church, First Baptist Church, Danville Independent Methodist Church, The Presbyterian Church of Danville, Trinity Episcopal Church, Lexington Avenue Baptist Church, Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. James AME Church.
We are grateful to the ministers, musicians, staff and members of these churches who willingly, graciously and generously shared of their time, talent and spaces.
We are also thankful that so many community members joined in, contributing questions and insight into the history of our downtown.
The Arts Commission would like to give a special thanks to Rev. Ralph Smith and the members of St. James AME for hosting us at a fabulous dinner at the conclusion of the tour.
On days like Sunday, we are reminded why Danville IS a great place to call home.
