The Boyle County Public Library provides a welcoming environment for people of all ages. Assisting the library in its mission is the Friends of the Library, a non-profit auxiliary support group that provides volunteers and major funding for the library’s summer reading programs and other needs. Recently Jim Moore, local FOTL Treasurer, received the “Outstanding Friend of the Year” award from the Friends of the Kentucky Libraries for his outstanding service to the library.
In addition to annual membership donations, the primary FOTL means for library fundraising was through used book sales. Prior to the pandemic they would host two major book sales a year in the library rotunda. During the pandemic the large sales ceased due to safety concerns, however the Friends remained committed to providing assistance for library programs. Moore stepped up with the Grab ‘n Go concept providing a convenient library option for used book sales any day the library is open. His creative problem solving ensured the survival of the Boyle County Friends group.
Moore was nominated by FOTL secretary Alexis Angolia. In her nomination letter she wrote “Jim came up with the idea of having tables set up at the front of the library so people could still buy books and support the Friends. Jim would go in almost every day and restock the tables and make up mystery bags of books.” Moore’s tireless efforts meant that FOTL was able to give BCPL over $11,000 for the 2022 summer reading program.
Moore has been a steadfast member of the Friends for decades, serving as treasurer. He is also chairman of the book sales committee, and can often be found volunteering behind the circulation desk at the library. “In addition to Jim’s well deserved state honor for his volunteer service, he is also highly recognized as the backbone supporting the Danville FOTL organization – a true Friend,” said FOTL president Deb Cullen.
Moore’s unwavering commitment to BCPL makes the library a better place for our community. A reception to honor Moore will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in the library lobby. Light refreshments will be served. All are invited to attend.
