Library to host Read to the Stars with Hank the Horse

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, and resources for the community. Programs are available for all ages and include gardening, interactive games, and weekly storytimes. In addition, free tax preparation services will be offered through mid-April. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

Gatherings Artists Spring Exhibit Opening Reception

The Boyle County Public Library will host the opening reception for the Gathering Artists Spring 2023 Exhibit, “Something New, Something Blue,” on Friday, March 10 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Mahan Gallery. The exhibit will feature the works of over 20 regional artists. Each piece of art reflects the exhibit title, being both recent and primarily blue, no matter what the subject matter. The art displayed will include paintings, drawings, jewelry, quilts, felted pieces, handwoven items, and more. Much of the art will be for sale. The exhibit will be on display at the library from March 3 through April 12. (This event was rescheduled due to the storm on March 3.)

Read to the Stars

On Saturday, March 11 from 9-10:30 a.m., kids and families are invited to a special event at the library. “Read to the Stars” is a storytime extravaganza. Wear your pajamas and join us for breakfast and stories with a special equine friend. Hank the Horse will be inside the library to welcome young readers and their families. Eat breakfast with Hank using our cereal buffet, then listen to stories perfect for bedtime and make a star craft. All youth attendees will get their very own reading buddy horse plushie and flashlight keychain so they can keep reading every night before bed! This event is offered in partnership with Danville Education Association. (Kids & Families)

Teen D&D

On Saturday, March 11 from 2-4 p.m. teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. Players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. (Ages 13-18)

Chess Mix

On Saturday, March 11 from 2:30-4:30 Pp.m.M, visit the library and enjoy an afternoon of chess and a savory snack. This program is for all skill levels. This event will be held in the Community Room. (All ages)

Adult D&D

The library offers a Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, March 12 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)

Morning Storytime & Afternoon Storytime

Join us for storytime at the library! Each week we will read stories and have a themed sensory activity for young children to enjoy. Morning Storytime will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Afternoon Storytime will be held on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. in the youth department. In March, an ASL interpreter will be at Storytime on Tuesdays. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome to attend with their caregivers. (Ages 2-5)

Boyle County Writers

On Tuesday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m., gather with fellow writers to practice your writing skills, share your work, and receive feedback from peers. Facilitated by local author Paul Stansbury, this monthly event will be held in the Conference Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

Kid STEAM Lab: Sand Play

On Wednesday, March 15 at 4 PM, kids are invited to combine science experiments and art for a fun STEAM project. This week we will be experimenting with kinetic sand. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Kids)

Third Thursday Book Club

In March the book club will be reading The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis. Join the book discussion on Thursday, March 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

Teen Superhero Pizza Party

Teen superhero fans assemble! On Thursday, March 16 from 4-6:30 p.m., join us for a party to celebrate the superheroes we love most, and design your own hero secret identity. We’ll eat pizza, play games to practice our superhero skills, then create masks and hero emblems while watching a movie (2019, PG-13, 132 minutes). We’ll get our inspiration from the movie’s hero who, after saying the magic word, tests out his abilities with a teen friend. All teens will leave with a free comic book! The movie title can be found in the event listing on the library’s website. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 13-18)

Teen Game On

Teens are invited to play Nintendo Switch and board games at the library on Fridays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. This event will be held on the 5th Level of the library. (Ages 13-18)

The ABCs of Dog Training – Informational Workshop

On Saturday, March 18 from 2:30-4:30 p.m., the Boyle County Public Library will be hosting a multi-part workshop aimed at helping you improve your furry friend’s education, discipline, and enrichment. Offered in partnership with local dog trainer Danielle Livasy, this session is informational and demonstrative only. There will be information and techniques taught that you can practice at home with your pet. (Please do not bring your dogs to this session.) This event will be held in the Community Room. (All ages)

Free Tax Prep

The Boyle County Public Library has once again partnered with the AARP Foundation and the United Way of the Bluegrass to host free tax preparation service. Tax professionals will be set up in the library each week on Tuesdays and Saturdays through mid-April to assist people with the tax filing process. This service is made possible through Tax-Aide and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs. These tax preparation services are available by appointment only.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide tax assistance services will be available on Tuesdays from 10 AM to 2 p.m. Although anyone can make an appointment, the program is especially focused on low-to-moderate income taxpayers who are age 50 and older. United Way of the Bluegrass VITA Tax Preparation Assistance will be available by appointment on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for people with eligible household incomes. For more information and to schedule an appointment, e-mail 211info@uwbg.org, call 2-1-1, or go online to uwbg.org/VITA.
