Boy Scouts having 51st Annual Spaghetti Dinner on Friday
Published 6:25 pm Thursday, May 4, 2023
Scouts BSA Troops 119 and Troop 2 are having their 51st Annual Spaghetti Dinner to raise funds for their units and camp. Dinner is served 5-8 pm Friday night May 5, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Please use the 1st Street Basement.
After a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the now 50-year tradition of Scout Troop 119 is serving spaghetti on Derby Eve. Begun in 1970 by members Dr. Pesci, Jim Kehoe, and George Perros as a way to buy camping equipment, the now annual spaghetti dinner was first cooked. The sauce is the same recipe at the Townhouse Restaurant owned by George Perros. In 2000 a Marinara, or meatless sauce was introduced, so that there is now a choice.
In 2018 the all-girl, Troop 2, joined in the dinner with a silent auction. In 1980, Scoutmaster Gerry Lunney would peg the date as a Derby Eve dinner. As we come off this 3-year hiatus, we have discovered that there are 3 or 4 who have actually worked a dinner. This means that the tradition that begun 50 years ago is as new as it was in 1970.
The Scouts working and serving the dinners are standing in the same place as their grandfathers, fathers, and uncles.
Pricing is $8.00 Adults $4.00 Children, under 5 eat free. Call Steve Ellis at 236-0722 for more information.
