Boyle County High School senior Eli Goggin was named as a National Merit semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Committee. The 16,000 students named represent just the top 1% of seniors in the nation.
In February, he will find out if he is a finalist and if so, sometime between April and July, he will learn if he has been named as a Merit Scholar, of which only 7,600 students are chosen. Those students earning National Merit scholarships will receive a combined $31 million in scholarships.
“Eli is a great asset to Boyle County Schools,” remarked Mark Wade, Boyle County High School principal. “He is obviously an amazing scholar, but he also brings with it a positive attitude and the desire to get involved in the community.”
Semifinalists are chosen based on SAT scores, then to be considered to move on as a finalist, those seniors must submit a detailed application. The student must provide academic records, community involvement, school activities and any honors received, among other criteria. Boyle County High School has produced nine National Merit finalists in the past three years.
