This week our featured pet is Enchilada, a gorgeous black and white pit bull terrier mix with a spicy personality! This upbeat, fun-lovin’ kind of gal is about two and a half years old and has a joyous approach to life.

Enchilada has a zeal for zoomies and enjoys running around the yard carrying toys in her mouth, two great ways to burn her boundless energy. She shows you how happy she is with a broad smile and furiously wagging tail.

Enchilada is currently at Northpoint Training Center in Burgin, (Northpoint Trained Canines Program), learning how to be the best doggo she can be. DBCHS’s Mutts With Manners program matches carefully screened prison inmates with a shelter dog for six weeks.

Working together with a professional trainer, prison staff, and volunteers, Enchilada and other Mutts With Manners dogs learn basic obedience training, socialization, behavior modification, and receive one-on-one companionship during their stay.

The inmates and the dogs live together in the prison dormitory and attend weekly training sessions. They follow a strict training regimen that provides the dogs with the structure they need to adapt to a traditional home. Demand for balanced, trained dogs is high, as proven by other successful model prison training programs across the United States. Our Mutts With Manners dogs are no exception.

In the end, the dogs participating in the program graduate with a wealth of valuable skills that help give them an increased chance (or a paw up) on finding a loving home. Mutts With Manners are more confident, better behaved, ready to start a new life with a loving family. They are all AKC Canine Good Citizen certified, too!

Due to COVID concerns and safety protocol, Enchilada has been in training for many months and unable to leave Northpoint to meet potential adopters. Thankfully, we are now able to schedule off-site meet-and-greets while following CDC guidelines for safety, finally giving this sweet girl a chance to meet her furever family. As you might imagine, this love-a-bull pittie is more than ready to go home!
